 A Word from the Library...

Downloadable eBooks have added an exciting new dimension to Carver County Library (CCL) materials offerings.  Circulation of these titles from inception in mid-November 2011 through October 2012 was 14,279 and the collection now comprises 1,484 copies.  This activity is still a small percentage of overall materials circulation and budget (2011 total circulation was over 1.1 million).  Print materials continue to circulate briskly among Carver County Library users, and this is not expected to change in the foreseeable future.

As with any new technology, the state of eBook publishing is extremely fluid.  Public libraries in particular are wrestling with title and technology access issues in conjunction with decreasing materials budgets and increasing demand overall.  Carver County Library will continue to monitor publishing trends and deliver the services that residents need and want as cost-effectively as possible.

One recent local development which you may have heard about is a collaboration between 3M’s new library book lending service and three metro-area librariesDakota, Washington, and Ramsey County library systems are the first in what we expect will involve all eight metro libraries, including Carver County.   Collaborative ventures such as this are of great interest to CCL because of their cost-effectiveness and “seamlessness” across wide service areas.  Find out more about this development at
